Annual Meeting Highlights

Things have changed.

Electricity used to be treated like an all-you-can-eat buffet, said Jim Cox, chair of the North Itasca Electric Cooperative board. “Take all you want,” was the attitude; “there is plenty to go around.”

Now, he said, that attitude has become “conserve what we’ve got.”

Cox was speaking before 370 members and friends who had come to enjoy the cooperative’s 68th annual meeting since it was formed in 1940.

Watching our Waters

Did you know that Itasca County holds 10 percent of all the lakes in Minnesota? This means we are the Fort Knox of Lakes! Our lakes are the gold of the state. Lakeshore owners in the county have a real responsibility of maintaining and protecting our lakes to assure our precious resource stays like Fort Knox: priceless.

The stewardship of our waters includes all the lakes, streams, rivers, and brooks that flow from Itasca County south to the Gulf of Mexico, north to Hudson Bay and east to Lake Superior.

Roxanne's Sales Talk

Summer is finally here and with that a lot of people are wondering how they are going to stay cool without spending a fortune in electric bills.

This month let’s talk about some of the things that you can do to stay cool and save money.

At night after the sun goes down, if it is cooler outside than in the house, open up your windows and let the cool air in while letting the hot air out. Leave them open during the night to help cool the house down. Shut the windows early in the morning before it starts to heat up. Pull the shades to keep the sun out and try to limit the amount of times the outside door gets opened, every time the door gets opened you get a burst of heat in the house and lose all your cool air.

North Itasca board members elected to offices in MREA, GRE  

Bruce LeinoWes Waller

Congratulations to Bruce Leino, director from District 7 and Wes Waller, director from District 2. Both of the North Itasca Electric board members have recently been elected to new positions. Bruce Leino was elected as vice-chairman of the 34 member Great River Energy board of directors at its annual meeting on June 12. Wes Waller has joined the Minnesota Rural Electric Association board as one of two to represent the seven electric cooperatives in the Arrowhead region.





July Events  

Health Expo, Bigfork Valley

Saturday, July 19, 1-4 p.m.

The Bigfork Valley campus just east of Highway 38 in Bigfork will be open for the third annual Health Expo on Sat., July 19; 1-4 p.m.

Wonder just what happens when a joint is replaced? Curious about how varicose veins are treated with the Trivex procedure? Interested in learning about some leading techniques to manage chronic pain? Come talk with the surgeons! Drs. Baker, Baich and Olson will have their equipment at hand and be available to talk with visitors.

July 2008 Calendar of Events

1 North Country Gardeners meet at Marcell Family Center, 7 p.m.; bring a nice rock for the planned rock garden. Mary Blickendorfer from the University of Minnesota will present a program on bog and rain gardens. Everyone welcome.
2 Naturalist program at Cut Foot Sioux. “Tree Cookies.” Trace history in tree rings, and make your own tree cookie. 11 a.m., 2 p.m.
3 Art on the Edge: Fourth Annual Juried Exhibit opens at Edge Center Gallery
3 Naturalist program at Discovery Center. “Black Bears of the Northwoods,” kids can make a bear print. 11 a.m.
4 North Itasca Electric Co-op offices closed. Happy 4th of July!
5 Celebrate 100 years of our National Forests with a tour of the old Ranger Station, play old time games. 2 p.m.
5 Opening Reception for Art on the Edge, Edge Center Gallery, 5 to 7 p.m. Voting for the People’s Choice award.
