Roller Bound for River Town...II

by Sally Sedgwick

Education budgets were tight. For the extras, like band or basketball, students contributed activity fees.

It still wasn’t enough.

Deer River High School faced a grim prospect last year. A way had to be found to raise $10,000 or some activities, sports or transportation would have to be cut.

A way to help literally came to him in the middle of the night, said English teacher Phill Hermel. He would roller blade 50 miles to raise money and awareness of the situation.

RoundUp® grant applications due Oct. 5

“Just want to say 'Thank You' so very much for the $500 grant to allow us to entertain the area seniors for a day,” wrote Marn Flicker of the Jesse Lake Watershed Association. “The entire day was a great success!”

“Words, indeed, cannot express the humble appreciation and profound gratitude at the outpouring of support we have received for the BHS Alumni Committee’s Buy-A-Meter Campaign,” wrote Irl Sinclair and Ann McGarry of the alumni association. “...You were a generous part of our success. Your donation of $250.00 gave the campaign a boost and encouraged others to see that the dream of building a track for our athletes, plus an upgrade on other track and field venues and the ball diamond could, indeed, become a reality.”

October is Coop Month

October is co-op month! Today there are over 900 rural electric cooperatives in the country, according to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. There are 2.4 million miles of electric distribution lines owned by those cooperatives - that’s 43 percent of the distribution lines in the country. Those lines spread across America - serving 75 percent of the land area. Cooperatives generate almost 5 percent of the electricity produced in the country, delivering 10 percent of the total sold annually. And jobs? Electric cooperatives employ 67,000 people.

Cooperatives operate under seven principles, reprinted on the continuing page from the NRECA web site, at www.nreca.coop.

  2. Decide which wash cycle best fits how dirty your clothes are. Each cycle uses a different amount of time, so if your clothes are really dirty, try soaking them first, then use the setting that runs for a shorter time.
