Turtles!

... continued

When will they begin hatching? Visitors can make their guess at the Center. But here’s a hint...it’s usually around Smokey Bear’s birthday. This year Smokey Bear will turn 60 years old on August 9.

The 32 eggs were laid on June 18, with an expected incubation period of 50-125 days. The average in Minnesota is 55 days.

This year there are also painted turtle eggs being incubated. Thirteen were laid on June 4, with an expected incubation period of 10-12 weeks.

Break out the calculator and stop by the center. You might get a chance to name a baby or help to release it into its new lake home.
