Fair weekend is August 10-12, and both admission and parking are free although visitors may purchase a Fair Button to be eligible for many prizes.
Many of the traditional events continue, including the Sinkhole Scramble, a 10k run (or a shorter 2 mile option), now in its 25th year. Last year the run attracted about 125 participants, Lukenbill said. The Old Settler’s Cabin and a petting barn will be also be open, and the grandstand will host a community Variety Show.
Garden produce will be displayed in the Big Ten vegetable contests in the new Fair building. This year the number of prizes will be increased because of interest, both the garden display and theme bouquet receiving cash first and second place prizes.
One traditional event that won’t return is the demolition derby. It will be replaced by lawnmower races, said Lukenbill. But don’t picture this as a sedate weekend ride around the house...it’s actually a national sport with a circuit all its own, he said, and next year organizers hope that it will be an official event in that circuit. This year there will be three events; single or twin cylinder and rear engine mowers. Basically any riding lawnmower will qualify, Lukenbill said, but blades have to be removed.
One of the highlights of the Fair in recent years has been the fireworks. “I would say our fireworks display is one of the best in northern Minnesota,” said Lukenbill. Choreographed to music, viewers can watch the show overhead from the grandstand bleachers.
Enjoying the displays and events is what the weekend is all about, said Lukenbill. “Our focus is mainly just a good time...people really enjoy it for that.”
