  • Clean the lint filter after every use
Remove the lint from the filter after every use. Softeners, among other things, can cause build up on the filter, if this happens you can clean the filter with a soft brush and soapy water. Also check to make sure there are no rips in the filter. If there is a rip, replace the filter right away.

  • Clean area under filter
Periodically while you have the filter out slide your hand in the duct where the filter sits and remove any extra lint that slipped past the filter. You can use a vacuum cleaner if necessary to reach in the duct to suck the lint out. If the build up in there is severe it is very important to disassemble the dryer and clean it out more thoroughly. This should be done by a qualified appliance repair technician, because of the risk of injuring yourself or damaging the machine.

  • Clean interior of cabinet
The lint produced by clothes tumbling in a dryer is normally caught in the lint filter. However, some lint escapes and accumulates on the inside of the dryer cabinet. At least, once a year the cabinet should be checked and cleaned if necessary. (More frequently if the dryer is used heavily.)

  • Clean the dryer vent
Check the entire length of the vent pipe for lint build up at least once a year (more often if the dryer is used heavily). This can be done with a vent brush for cleaning 4” round dryer vents, available in 10 or 20 ft. lengths.

The vent on your dryer should be made of aluminum. The white vinyl ducts that were common years back no longer meet most of the new building codes, because if your dryer ignites the vent, a fire may start in your home.

Remember, a little of your time now can save you a lot of heartache down the road.
