WilderNest Underway
by Sally Sedgwick
What are the new footings for that are appearing across the Rice River on the east side of Bigfork?
It will be a place to live for 12 families: the realization of a goal that began over 10 years ago when a community planning session identified affordable housing as a pressing need. Later another planning session facilitated through the Blandin Community Partnership reinforced that goal.
In 2001 the project became formalized under the direction of long time advocate Tarry Edington, now working for the Itasca County Housing & Redevelopment Authority (HRA).
And it got a name: WilderNest.

The Eagleview Foundation
by Toni Wilcox
No one wants to have a huge empty building with broken windows and graffiti in the middle of their neighborhood, but that’s exactly what a group of Squaw Lake residents feared when it looked like Eagleview Elementary was going to close. Dedicated in 1954, the school was once filled to capacity with students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Now serving pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, Eagleview was given a new lease on life when the ISD 318 school board voted to keep the school open despite an enrollment of just a couple dozen students.
The board’s decision came after community members stepped forward to take on the task of making improvements to make Eagleview both the first choice for area parents, and a community learning center for people of all ages. Those volunteers formed the nonprofit Eagleview Community Foundation and invite anyone interested in lifelong learning to join them in their efforts. The Foundation’s first annual membership meeting will be at 7 p.m. September 19 in the school library. Annual dues are just five dollars and your contribution is tax deductible.
