Summer Road Projects
by Sally Sedgwick

Perhaps the most welcome news about the area summer road construction is what will not be done: there will be no major construction on Highway 38 this year.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be MNDOT equipment. According to Project Engineer Kevin Rohling, over 520 deciduous and coniferous trees will be planted along the road where construction has occurred. Originally that landscaping was slated for the urban Grand Rapids end, where homeowners take care of the right of way to the roadway itself. Now, however, other spots along the recent construction where there are residences have been added to the project.

“We’re not interested in throwing away schools,” explained ISD 318 board member Harvey Hietala.

He was speaking during a community meeting in Squaw Lake to discuss options for Eagleview elementary school. The school enrollment had declined to 24 in K-6, and 37 students were needed to operate it as a breakeven facility.

Rather than a simple decision to close the school, the district chose to come to the community to seek ideas that would resolve the situation. It understood, explained Hietala, the importance of a school to a community.

Mills publishes book
by Sally Sedgwick

“The things we love are really on the line,” said Murray Mills. Once it’s developed, it’s gone. There’s absolutely no way to bring it back.”

Mills was talking about something he loves passionately; the wildlife and environment of the northland. He has seen pretty little lakes become overpopulated in other parts of the state, he explained, and end up fishless with bad water quality.

A story of the Giant Diving Beetle
by Sally Sedgwick

It’s phenology, the observation of nature during different seasons, and at North School the students in Mrs. Gephart’s 4-5 classroom have been sharpening their observation skills by noticing and recording what is around them.

It started when John Latimer, a phenologist who has a weekly phenology show on KAXE radio, kicked off the topic in her third grade classroom. Each month the students would make a big calendar.
