AREA STUDENTS HELP OUT KATRINA VICTIMS
by Sally Sedgwick
At 7 a.m. on August 29, Katrina came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane.
The story of what happened as a result of that hurricane galvanized the generosity of the nation. And on November 19, a dozen high schoolers from Bigfork left to do their part in ongoing relief efforts.
The group of students together with three adults will be headquartered in Gretna, Louisiana, said Mike Stevens, pastor of the Bigfork Assemblies of God Church, and will donate five work days before returning on Nov. 27.

$10,000 reward offered
That’s right, $10,000 if you have information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for shooting insulators on Great River Energy’s Transmission System which provides electric service to North Itasca’s substations.
On November 11, 2005 at 4:57 p.m. we suspect that some thoughtless hunter decided to take his frustrations out on our transmission line by shooting out the insulators. This was no mistake or accident and whoever the shooter was, he’s given good hunters a black eye. Over 4,300 meters serving 12,000 local folks and visiting deer hunters were needlessly and maliciously left in the dark for 3 hours and 45 minutes. Businesses throughout northern Itasca and southern Koochiching County could not operate. Cash registers didn’t work, gas pumps didn’t work, lights didn’t come on – it’s fortunate there were no accidents that we know of.

Over the CEO’s Desk
by Jeff Ortman,
Chief Executive Officer
RATE ADJUSTMENT APPROVED
At their Board Meeting on November 22, 2005 your Board approved a rate adjustment which will allow us to meet our obligations and mortgage requirements in 2006. Rate adjustments decisions are never easy but when you've made all the cuts, examined your operation for efficiency and still have an obligation to provide safe and reliable service, the only thing left is to increase rates, decrease service or go out of business. We've managed to go for five years without any adjustments while our power costs and other operating expenses continued to increase. The cost of 1,000 KWhs today ($96.00) is still $4.70 less than it was in 1985 ($100.70) so this rate adjustment will be only slightly higher than what you paid 20 years ago.

Be a Winner!
North Itasca Electric Co-op., Inc. and Great River Energy, North Itasca Electric Co-op., Inc.’s wholesale power provider, are conducting a survey of residential energy use to help forecast future energy needs. If you are lucky enough to be selected to receive the survey and return it on time with the gift drawing card, you will be automatically entered into the drawing for one of six (6) $50.00 Energy Credits.
Participants for this survey are randomly selected residential members in North Itasca Electric Co-op., Inc.’s service area. This survey was sent out the third week of November. The completed and returned survey and drawing card must be postmarked by December 17, 2005 to be eligible for the Energy Credits offered. The drawing for the Energy Credits will be held in January of 2006. The winner will be notified by mail.
Participating in this survey will not only enter your name into the survey drawing for a chance to win one of the six $50.00 Energy Credits but it will help North Itasca Electric Co-op., Inc. and GRE meet your future power needs. Final survey results should be available in the spring of 2006. They will be discussed in North Itasca Electric Co-op., Inc.’s WATTS NEWS, so watch for the results.
