SCHOOL CHANGES NAME TO EAGLEVIEW
Squaw Lake School is now Eagleview School.
The name change was approved at a District 318 School Board meeting on Aug. 15. The new name, explained teaching principal Wendy Muntean, is descriptive of the eagles that are often seen from the playground at the school. It also recognizes the location of the school in the Chippewa National Forest, a place where much of the research has been done on the bird that is our national emblem.
Although the name change had been under consideration for a number of years, it was becoming important to do it, explained Muntean. The Leech Lake Tribe had taken an official position that the name should be referred to as S. Lake because of the perceived derogatory nature of the word “squaw.” In the close relationship between the school and representatives of the tribe, the name had become a source of confusion.
The action will have no effect on the name of the town.
